Ask DST #204- My question answered!

Chuck over at Diamond Select Toys recently posted a new “Ask DST” over on his site, and lucky me, he answered my Cap/minimates question! Check it out!

“Hello, I’m a big fan of minimates and an even bigger fan of Captain America, so let me start out by thanking you for all the love you’ve shown the Star-Spangled Avenger through the line. And another big THANK YOU for included an alternate Steve Rogers head for the new Nick Fury Jr. minimate coming out soon! (The optional parts were shown at Toy Fair this year so I hope they’re included!)

So along that same line, I was wondering if any thought had been given to including any of Steve’s supporting cast into the minimate line. Characters like Sharon Carter, Falcon, Winter Soldier, Dr. Faustus, The Sleeper, and Sin are sorely missing from collection, just to name a few, and I know how you guys are fans of the “theme” waves, so that would be a great way to bang out a bunch all at once!

In any case, keep up the great work, and thanks for making awesome collectible toys so small that my wife doesn’t mind when I buy new ones! Thanks,Eric

P.S.- My wife is a big Captain America fan too, and she keeps asking me why I don’t have an Agent 13. Help me make her happy!

DST Chuck: I would think with the movie coming in 2014 you will see more comic Cap Minimates and there are a couple bigger ones we did not do last time around.”

A pretty standard “nothing to report yet” style answer, but the end of that response has me a little puzzled. “A couple of bigger ones we did not do last time around.” What does that mean? Needless to say I’m excited about the prospect of new Cap merchandise and I’ll be on the lookout for any more info I can find.

Also, in case you want to read it, you can find the entire “Ask DST #204” here on the Art Asylum official site.

Earlier today, this picture appeared online, supposedly from the Marvel Movie “Phase One” bluray box set that was released just this past Tuesday. The box set features a bunch of goodies and sneak peeks at “Phase Two”, which of course includes “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, so I can’t help but jump to the conclusion that this is concept art for our beloved title character.

The look of this mask would be a departure from the one used by The Winter Soldier in the comics and it’s half-mask/goggle design brings my mind right to James Franco’s New Goblin design from Spider-Man 3. Not that it’s a bad thing, I loved Franco’s Goblin outfit, I just don’t know how I feel about it for Cap’s newest cinematic rival.

A new S.H.I.E.L.D. Commander for The Winter Soldier?

Robert Redford has been confirmed for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It was revealed the Oscar-winning actor/director would be playing the new head of S.H.I.E.L.D., a position typically held by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

So the question is just where that leaves our beloved, cycloptic badass. Anyone who’s read Ed Brubaker’s “Winter Soldier” story arc knows that Fury was a key player in the events that unfolded, leaving me somewhat puzzled. Is Nick being replaced or will Redford be playing one of the U.N. suits behind S.H.I.E.L.D. that we saw in The Avengers? I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled for release April 4th, 2014 and will star Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Hayley Atwell, Georges St-Pierre, Robert Redford and Maximiliano Hernández.

Tribbles, tribbles, everywhere!

DST seems to be in love with their new Minimates U.S.S. Enterprise, and I for one don’t blame them!

First there was the announcement of the classic Enterprise complete with an exclusive Kirk minimate and removable command chair.

They followed that up by announcing an exclusive “Mirror Mirror” version of the ship will be available via Entertainment Earth.

Now Action Figure Xpress is getting it’s own “Trouble with Tribbles” Variant, including a new Kirk minimate and a slew of tiny, fuzzy tribbles! The ship herself (Scotty would roll over in his future-grave if I called the Enterprise “it”) appears to be the same as the regular release, but the new Green-outfit Kirk might make this set worth it, especially if you missed out on the “Tribbles” Kirk released way back in 2008.

All are expected to ship around the April-May area, but you can pre-order now to start your own minimates minifleet!

New SFIV Play Arts Variants

One of my favorite online retailers,, recently added new color variants for the first two waves of Square Enix’s Play Arts Kai Street Fighter IV series. Included in this wave are black versions of Ryu and Chun Li, while Cammy and Akuma feature new white deco.

Interesting thing to note, however, is that they have the Ryu labeled as “Evil Ryu”, despite the fact that he doesn’t appear to have the darker skin tone or red eyes that are standard on this version of the character.

Regardless, if you’re a fan of Street Fighter, great toys, or variants, these new release may be worth your time.
